Another trans dip stick
I know that many of us have made our own transmission dipsticks using different ideas and materials. I found this one on eBay. Looks homemade, but should work just fine. Cheap enough if you don't want to make your own.

Not to be a cheapskate, but why waste money, but surely that one could easily be duplicated with a piece of that flexible wire and some heat shrinkable tube.
All we need are the dimensions. BIG HINT

Here is the chart you need to make an accurate level. The oil level is measured from the oil pan. I would make a mark about 60 mm and 65mm on the stick, then check it after you have driven it for a while to be sure it is up to operating temperature, 185°+. The level should be between the marks.

Mine is an OEM dipstick for the 722.6 transmission.
The first mark for the low range @ 25 deg C is 5/16" from the tip then the high range mark @ 25 deg C is 3/4" from the tip. Then the next markings are for the low range of 80 deg C which is 2" from the tip to the high range of 80 deg C which is 2-1/2" from the tip.
Here are some pics to show what I mean :

But I need to know if you insert it into the tube until it touches the bottom of the pan to take the reading??
The dipstick is much longer than the fill tube
Thanks for any replies

The auto transmission mentioned above 722.6 is the Mercedes designation of our auto gearbox. In Chrysler manuals etc the designation of this Mercedes auto box is NAG1 (New Auto Gearbox) and both come in a variations to suit the engines they are matched with.
A lot of info on the problems, leaks, fluids etc can be found at;

this is perfect way to read your tranny fluid,, use any thing that will go to the bottom of the pan,, Woody's is a great way and cost is less than $.015 a 36" zip tie is great,, all you need to know is, if the fluid is less than 1" from the bottom you are two low...and if it is more than 1 3/4 you are overfull. anywhere in that 3/4 of an inch you are good. this is right from a Mercedes mech,, Oh he has a 40" dip stick because some dip stick tubs are longer than others but the reading on all are the same, the E55 tranny tube is 17" long the sl55 is 14 long yet the c63 is 27"long and the SRT6 is 12" i think don't quote me on those lengths.
sparkiesrt6 used your pic it shows the end the way i was shown at the Mercedes dealer. jim

So what fluid's everyone running?
This fits on the end of this thread just as well as starting a new thread.
I finally checked my fluid and had no oil on the dip stick, I checked when cold and when hot, nothing, nil, zero, zilch. No trouble with gear changes, no oil drips.
Not finding any approved fluid I used Dexron III as allowed in the Repair Manual.
I added 200cc's (6.7 fl.oz.) and when cold it was about 3/4" up my stick and it was on the high limit at the 80°C (176°F) marking on Sparkie's dip stick after a 1 1/2 hour highway run. I think I am a bit too high though.
I think at this level the fluid level is being measured inside the filler tube and that's why the level rises so quickly. With the level rising this quickly it would be very easy to overfill and removing it would take much longer than adding it, so watch out.
I did not have a good dipstick to test with at home when filling, I used a white plastic coated wire to start and it smeared so much pulling it out I could not see what level the oil was. I then used the smallest top sider tube I had, the outside would smear but the true level would be untouched inside.

look at the links above and look at the picture and you will see that 1 inch from the bottom is ok but on the lower side of low/ if it were me I would be right in the middle when the two notches, be careful it builds up very quickly, looks like to me you need to add, like one fourth of a quarter .. maybe less. jim
200cc's (6.7 fl.oz) took me from no reading at all to the high level at 25° and the high level at 80°.

P S this is what a Mercedes mechanic told me, then I verified it with two more Mercedes mechanics at two different dealers
as long as you warm up the car so that the transmission is it least warm. The level Between 1 and 2 inches from the bottom closer to the two inch mark, your good. the temperature Is no longer a factor when measuring it this way,, jim
