the only thing I had ever done close to this, was put a 454 chevy, 400 turbo auto...left the rear end stock, in a 68 firebird...it would smoke the stock tires just about anytime, anywhere...but if we had tubbed it, put in a narrowed 12 bolt chevy rearend and the big tires....well, I think she would have stood up....nice project....post some photos when done...
Something I'm kicking around is a little more wilder, not power-wise, but I guess from an engineering standpoint??? I've got a lead on a Volvo (Yamaha) V8. It's 4.4L of displacement and 32 valves. Because they're front mounted with a transverse style auto trans, I lose out on my stick. With the fuel tank right behind the seats and acting as a strength member I'd say that a full cage with some sort of integrated cradle for the engine to be laid out like an Audi R8. These motors are wayyyyy de-tuned, because of Volvo's hardon for safety (safe=slow to them) I have to replace a balance shaft in one so the whole motor is coming out and I will be taking measurements while out of the S80.
I'm still in the early (read: very very very early) stages of planning for an engine swap. Won't be on my current SRT, but most likely ono a second xf I pick up.
I'm sourcicng a 55k motor to put in. Should fit nicely (thanks to already seeing the N/A version go in) So it will all be to tuning and such. Should be a nice swap, however it will be a) about a $25k swap not including the donor car and b) a multi year swap as the plans sit right now...
Can't wait though. Several E55s are running in the high 10s right now. They weigh over 1000lbs more than the SRT. Should me for some fun times. I'm hoping for a 500lb savings when it is all said and done (read: new trans, rear, engine heavier, etc)
That's all I'll babble on about it until I actually get it up and running. Hope to have a donor car and the engine out by the end of this year... We'll see though.

It would be engine, trans, custom shafts, rear end, LSD, HSTC, all the modifications to the 55K engine (from '04-'06), tuning time, misc parts, shipping parts, maybe even a custom hood if the XF hood is too low for the 55k motor (I don't initially think it will be though)

I think I am going to use a Chevy 5.3 and trans out of a truck with a GTO front sump oil pan if it will fit. It has aftermarket support, its extremely affordable, and should get great mileage.

I think the only electrics I am going to keep/modify are the lights, stereo, power windows and HVAC. So no anti-lock brakes or stability control issues if you don't have them. I'm going to install an aftermarket keyless entry and security system as well. All the gauges are going to get replaced with gauges out of the truck.

One thing I thought of was that you're probably going to need to get your car to think it's a manual since you won't have any input from the transmission and that could make the whole thing a bit hairy when trying to get the electronics you're gonna keep in the car from going nuts.

If you want to keep the stock heater controls, the body control module has to stay. I think it would be really easy to retain most of the electronics you need to keep the cluster if you found a wrecked manual that you could swap out the ECU, BCM, and key fob with. You wouldn't even need to tear the dash apart then, jsut switch the blade of the key with the one from the donor car and you're set. Knock you the CAN signals to the ESP/YAW sensor so you don't have any of that, knock out the dummy lights you never want to see, wire up resistors to the factory wiring for the coils and injectors and then just tap into the new engines timing signal for RPM and run that to the Crank MAG inputs.
THANKS for making my swap plans sound impossible Rudy!
Guess I'll just take the money I just saved and put it into my Turbo Integra project. Able to beat ANY XF out there!

Ah, to heck with all this talk about Chevy this, or Mopar that.
I say gut the back end of the car, and slip in a Porsche Twin Turbo 3.8 Flat 6 Engine from a 911 GT2.
Then put in the front end drivetrain and suspension bits from a Carrera 4, and have the first AWD Twin Turbo Crossfire.
That would be a worthy, and probably pretty easy project, all things considered, and would make your car unique, and not some cookie cutter Chevy engine drop in project that has been done on everything from Yugo's to Metros.
