electric motor noise.
good morning all.
I hear what sounds like a small electric motor start up when I turn on my key. It is not the fan motor as I turned that off to be sure. Also, my ESP/BAS light stays on. Any coincidence.
Thanks in advance for any help. Oh, it is a 2004 crossfire base model.

Another sound once you have started your car is the air pump for emissions
It runs at start up and periodically while the engine is running
No relation to the BAS ESP light though but to reset that light while the car is running turn the steering wheel fully to the left and then fully to the right and then back to center
The light should go off right away or within a few miles of driving
This light is generally triggered by a faulty wheel speed sensor
BAS is your Brake Assist System and is designed to maximize the vehicles braking maneuvers.
ESP is the Electronic Stability Program.
This corrects for over/understeering of the vehicle by applying brakes to the appropriate wheel.
Engine torque is also limited.

If it's only with the key in on position & the car doesn't have to be started to hear it it's prob. the small fan running in the relay control compartment under the hood next to the battery. This fan is a continuous run with the key on & in run pos. to keep the same box cool & also cools, via small duct work, the tranny control module if equipped with an auto. tranny & the radio amplifier which are located under the pass. floor.
What air pump? I know of only one air pump that locks the doors and the hatch.
"Secondary air injection" is, I believe, the correct term. It injects air into the exhaust at startup to increase O2 in the exhaust to heat up the cats faster.
EPA nonsense, really. If it does NOT run, the CEL comes on and you get a P401 code. I know this because SO many of our cars experience a fracture of the solder on the RCM such that the pump won't run - and that means you can't pass an emissions test. A few minutes with a 100 watt soldering iron and some rosin core solder fixes it.
Ask me how I know this. (Twice in 70,000 miles)

But to summarize electric motors / pumps on Crossfires :
1. The secondary air injection pump on front top of the engine.
2. the ABS pump in front of the fuse box.
3. The itty bitty fan motor in the electronics box by the battery.
4. The REST pump front right fender.
5. The windshield washer pump in the passenger fender well.
6. The A/C blower under the passenger side dash.
7. The locking module pump in the rear right trunk well.
8. The engine cooling fan.
9. the electric fuel pump right side just in front of rear wheel.
10. the adjustment motors in each outside mirror.
11. The 2 window up/down motors.
12. the spoiler up/down motor on non-SRT6 models.
Limited : 6 seat adjustment motors.
SRT6 : the Intercooler pump front right below the headlight.
Roadsters : the top pump left rear fender well.
and .....
oledoc2u : the swiveling fan on top of the dash so he feels at home like he's in one of his 18 wheelers.
