Default Bas/esp light

Hello. 2005 2 door coupe. On a recent cruise my bas/ esp light and battery light came on. Also my spoiler opened up at 70 kph. I got to the park spot and my windows would not go up, the spoiler didn't go down, and when i tried to fire up the car i got clicking but nothing else. I got a boost from a battery pack. All power was restored. Everything worked as it should. 10 minutes later, lights came back on, spoiler went up, and had to keep revs up to keep car running. Battery light also on. Got home and noticed battery had 9.75 volts. Went to buy a new battery next day. All worked for about 15 minutes. Then it all happened again. Now the new battery was at 10 volts. Did an alternator check and was only at 10.5 volts. Does this mean alternator is pooched and causing all these systems to light up and fail? Any help would be great. My local Chrysler dealer says a new alternator is no longer available, when i go to my appointment June 24. But they are willing to look at it. How fortunate. LOL

Sounds like the alternator/ voltage regulator has entered a failure mode. The battery is providing all electrical power. If so, battery will run down fairly quickly. Rebuilt alternators are readily available & will provide years of reliable service.

Thanks. It seems like for some reason, which I can't explain, Chrysler dealers just dont even seem to want to work on these cars. Now I am conflicted as to if i should even go there. I just figured they would be easier to disgnose it and therefore save labour time. Anyhow thanks.

DO NOT GO TO A CHRYSLER DEALER

They no longer service a Crossfire as it has been out of production for 17 years
There may be a few that can help but its best you find an independent European repair shop
Alternators are still available for Crossfires but not at Chrysler
A reputable supplier for our Crossfire parts is Rob at Needswings
It does sound as if the alternator is what you need

Here it is but most European shops can locate one for to

Thank you. I am up here in Canada. I will find a shop up here. It is still strange to me, that they frown on working on their own stuff. I have a 55 chev and chevy loved it when i would let them work on it. And its been out of production for 70 years. LOL

It's not their own stuff anymore, it is Mercedes Benz.

How is the Crossfire "their own stuff"? Other than the TPMS and the body design, the car is an SLK320. In fact, most parts are cheaper if you search and order the part for "2003 SLK320".
You need no dealer to replace an alternator, any mechanic can do that for you - or you can do it yourself, which I did. My one caution: DO NOT buy a NAPA rebuilt alternator for that car. I went thru that, finally gave up and ordered a new Bosch thru Autozone and put it on myself.

Make sure to get the right alternator. Look at the back of the alternator and see if you have one wire connected or two wires.
I believe if it has two wires connected it's a Bosch, if it has one wire I believe it's a Valeo.

No, the SRT has three wires, all others have two:
Battery Stud:
Big #6awg black cable - high current output to starter (which is wired directly to the battery) [All cars]

Small connector:
Pin 1: Small #18awg wire - to instrument cluster for "battery" light [All cars]
Pin 2: Small #18 black/white wire - to PTCM "generator control" (SRT ONLY)
or....
Pin 2: No connection (Base and Limited)

The SRT alternator has internal differences to accommodate the control signal from the PTCM, it also has a wider pulley and I believe it can produce 15 more amps of current.
All of this is documented in the 2005 SRT/Limited/Roadster/Coupe service manual.

As to the Valeo/Bosch thing:
The differences revolve around the design of the battery lug used for connection to the big #6 cable and the configuration of the plastic housing of the back of the alternator. I got SICK of the Valeo and it's issues. I ordered a (new, not rebuilt)* Bosch, cut the plastic away around the stud, and installed it in place of the Valeo in 2023. That ended six years of screwing with Valeos that would not last. (Perhaps due to them all being NAPA rebuilds - may not have been the fact they were Valeo.)

Any more questions?

*Ask me how much THAT cost.

I would use the link below to research reputable M-B Service Shops in your area:

As others have stated, finding a Chrysler dealer that still works on these cars is rare. Most of the dealers have gotten rid of the tooling & diagnostic equipment long ago. I've got 2 Chrysler dealers in my area: one that never sold these cars & inherited the dealership when Chrysler consolidated their dealer network years ago (I would never take my Crossfire to these guys!); and a 2nd dealer that did sell these cars & has 2 Service Techs still employed that got the training to work on these cars. This last dealership is owned by a car enthusiast, that has his own collector car museum on site, & his passion is clearly visible throughout the dealership. But I still take my Crossfire to an independent M-B Service Shop for any major maintenance tasks because the prices for service work is so much cheaper than the Chrysler Dealer. All the routine & minor maintenance work I do myself & what I haven't done already I can learn the DIY steps from this Forum by those that have done these repairs before me.

Cool thanks. I have learned a ton from members and their posts. I already put a note in to a service shop here. Thanks.

Hey everyone. Just posting a thank you for all your tips and support. It was the alternator. For the record it was a Valeo. So I put the same in to replace it. Here in Ontario, Bumper to Bumper gave a 3 year warranty. Took it for a run and all good. Thanks again.

Glad you're up and running and thanks for the follow up here.
It's nice to know the outcome of situations when they arise
