You check the transponder ring wire.. hope you didn't pull it loose from the skreem module .. tucked behind the instrument cluster.

How will I know if it's loose? If it's the black wire that holds the rubber and crom thing that goes around the ignition then I have touched it. If that's not it please let me know what it is

Like I said it'll start and then it'll just die. Never had that problem before till I took the ignition pin out.

It's not reading the RFID chip in the FOB.. 3 times of "start-die" you will have to pull the battery cable to do it all over again.. unless you find the problem..

Make sure that the transponder ring is aligned properly as per the instructions. It could just be in an incorrect position. Best of luck.

Was it doing this before you did the sticky key mod?

Did you put the antenna ring back around the ignition cylinder?

Hey guys, I just did this to my car but for some reason the car just randomly locks itself when I unlock it, no alarm flash it just locks itself, seems to do it pretty consistently time wise like 30 seconds after I unlock it. Starts up fine, first time starting it after the fix it cranked but wouldn't start tried again and it ran perfectly. Any thoughts before I start tearing into it again?

So you unlock the car and don't open the door, and the car locks itself after 30 seconds? If that's the problem you're having, then it's not a problem - that is normal operation. My car does the same thing. If you unlock the car, open a door within that 30 seconds, then the car will not lock itself.

If you are having problems related to starting, my best guess would be the ring transponder is out of place.

I agree with breakneck. Operate the remote unlock and open one of the doors
within 30 seconds or the car will re-lock itself. Built-in security feature.

Thanks guys, just checked out this for myself. I just wanted to be sure that I didn't do anything wrong here. Call me paranoid after pulling apart a dashboard with tons of wires. Cheers!

My 2005 Limited Roadster has sticky ignition issue. Going to do the repair in my garage. Key won't turn at all. So when I drill out the locking pin in steering wheel lock assembly , does that resolve it or do I still need to open up hatch and remove spring and pin? Are there 2 pins at issue?

Thx
Tom

If you have downloaded the Sticky Key Fix PDF.. you will see drilling the pin is to be able to take the assembly out when it's locked up to be able to remove the culprit pin. Not a fun job.. do a search for those who have been there done that and the best results for "drilling".

You still have to open the hatch and remove the internal pin and spring.
As Mrmiata said, you have to drill just to be able to get the ignition assembly out of the car
so you can get to the hatch, pin and spring.

Just a note - I did my third one on Monday and it was locked up. I found that 2 of the three I've done were stickiest when it was hot out. The one I did this week was sitting in the sun with the windows up. I opened the doors and then took my silicone lube and put it in the freezer for half an hour, sprayed it in and got the key turned. Luck - yes. Repeatable - maybe , maybe not.... may be worth a try to do it in the morning when it is cooler and remember don't take the key out if it works! I also had a hard time trying to get the tumbler out so I left it in this time and it saved a step - no problems.

HMMM>...>>> Inverted can of computer dust off? Somebody get the ignition locked up and lets see if this gets you past drilling that pin..

What a breakthrough it would be to avoid drilling a stuck ignition.
And I'm all in favor of leaving the tumbler in the ignition for the fix.
Getting it back in during re-assembly is one of the trickiest steps in
the procedure.

I asked the wife is she had a can of computer keyboard spray and then I got the idea of putting the silicone in the freezer - it would be great if it worked but like I said seemed like I was lucky. Here's to someone proving it wasn't luck!!

This worked for me. With the steering wheel in the locked position, I was able to move it, back an forth (maybe 2in of play) an the switch worked. I may of just got lucky, and I wasn't going to try it again.
I thought the fix had been done, when I bought the car. Never had a problem, then at the worse time an most inopportune moment (boss driving), it locked up.
