I'm experiencing a problem with the automatic transmission on my '05 roadster. (which has only 49,000 miles) It won't shift out of second gear. Reverse, first and second run fine. My local dealership tells me that the transmission needs to be replaced, however the transmission (they claim) is no longer available and furthermore, when it was available it cost $8,000.00 plus labor. They then told me that even if I could find a salvaged transmission that they do not recommend doing a replacement because "it rarely works correctly". They then asked me if I would like for them to give me a "trade-in" estimate to buy a new car from them.
I am, of course, skeptical.
Does anyone have any experience with transmission replacement or repair? Any advice is appreciated.
The problem is generally the plate at the bottom of the gearbox. The solenoid plate is what it is called. A solenoid gets sticky and the car goes into limp mode which is just second gear.
You search to study this problem and see if your symptoms match the ones in the posts.
Never go near that dealership again they are just thieves.
Do it yourself for $300 bucks at the most.

This kit, is it all that I would need to do the job???
Anything else I should replace while doing this for future preventive maintenance???
Simple backyard mechanic job???
Thanks
That belt kit you advised did a great job
Sounds like someone has an overstock of new cars. Merc has been using the NAG-1 tranny since the start of this century in almost all of their light and middleweight cars. Are two of them, small case and large case & pretty sure the Crossie uses the small case.
Are some things I'd want to do to one from a recycling center (e.g. replace the plate) since easy when on the bench but is nothing serious.
Might ask around but suspect even some Jeeps used the same tranny (my GC has a large case).
Find an indy who knows mercs but is really no big.

Yes, the kit is all that is needed, and I can't think of anything else you need to replace.
I would highly recommend using a vacuum extractor.
Mine is semitransparent, so I was able to mark the level which made it easy to put the exact amount back in.
It is pretty simple, IF you have access to a lift, otherwise very messy and cramped if you have to put the car on stands.

Do you clean out the extractor tank to measure the fluid taken out? My extractor has seen an ungodly mix of fluid and I am not to sure I could attempt to clean it out. Inquiring minds need to know.

Yes, I do.
I first wash it out with gasoline, then wipe it clean with paper towels.

My would not clean out too easily angled I would not be bothered to do it anyway, I was born .I was born last snd it is too late th change now.
I have a dipstick, in fact two of them, to tell me what the level is.

Thanks for all your advice over the years.
Oil is cheap compared to repairs
I am just gonna replace old oil with fresh
Thanks for all your advice thru the years
Thanks 180. I've been doing a little more on-line research and I'm beginning to get a better picture of what I need to do. Yes, certainly the dealer is a yahoo and I won't be going to them again for anything. Last summer I had them replace an alternator and while they were cleaning up the interior one of their guys somehow broke the driver's seat adjuster. They denied any responsibility until I said the magic words, "my attorney".
Good news, everyone! The transmission trouble with my '05 has been fixed and for only $440. The problem was the "communicator" between the engine computer and the transmission. I have my prized possession back and I couldn't be happier. My local dealer who told me it was beyond repair can bite my shiny metal ***.
