Engine, Exhaust, Transmission and DifferentialPost questions here that have to do with the engine, cooling system, air intake, exhaust, Transmission and Differential
I've had my 2006 Crossfire a little over a month now and have a "non-visual" leak. When I come to a stop is when I smell a burnt oil on exhaust. The valve cover gaskets are new and show no signs of leaking. I see no tell tale splotches on the exhaust manifolds where oil might have dropped anywhere under the hood. The only slightly oily residue I see is where the transmission line hooks to the steel line going to the cooler. That may or may not be the problem but that's all under the exhaust and I don't see a way of it getting to the exhaust. Just the same I'll put a new clamp on the line. Any ideas would be appreciated.
When I get a chance I'll jack up the car and see what I can see under the car.
Maybe I know where the leak is coming from. While the car was on a lift, having the front end looked at, I noticed the auto trans had oil all over it. (Not fluid!) "Appears" the rear main seal may be leaking/seeping. Could not ascertain that it was in fact the rear main but is highly suspect. No oil has been leaking on my driveway so it's not that bad "yet!" If it's bad the auto trans will have to be removed for access to the seal. Not something I can or even want to do in my driveway. The oil is probably blowing back on the exhaust when driving and is what I'm smelling when I come to a stop. "Guess could put a diaper on it and change it once a month." LoL
How much is too much oil in the engine? I checked the oil level and it reads at the top of the plastic end of the dip stick which is beyond the full scale.
That's too high. Most people put in 8.5 quarts of oil at changes - this is simply too much. Put in 8 quarts, that's what Iv'e done since 2009. This will be close to the top end of the range on the dipstick.
Keep in mind, "safe" is up to 2 quarts below full (read the manual carefully). There is no need to put more than 8 quarts in there.

Being that I bought the car a little more than a month ago, I have no idea how much oil was put in. It had just been changed before I bought it. I think your confusing the transmission fluid with engine oil. Engine is 6.1quarts and trans holds 8.5 quarts. Transmission is exactly what amount of fluid you remove because you can't drain the torque converter.

Why bother to ask if you know the answer, myself I would take the word of someone who has been here eleven years not a month.
You should write the definitive book on servicing the Crossfire.

Here we go again. Was he correct or not? His call on the fluid levels might cause someone to overfill the engine oil with 8 quarts of oil. My question was how far up on the dipstick can the level be above the full mark. I was/am concerned about engine damage by having too much oil in the crankcase. The Crossfire in new to me and so I asked. I was not trying to arguementive or trying to rewrite the service manual.

I think your confusing the transmission fluid with engine oil. Engine is 6.1quarts .
Absolutely WRONG !!!
Engine oil capacity is 8.5 quarts and often when doing an oil change 8.0 quarts will fill the engine because when you use the drain plug to change the oil approx half a quart remains in the oil pan due to the inside design of the surface
If using an oil extractor you might be able to add 8.5 quarts without overfilling it but it is safest to only fill with 8 quarts and check the oil level after a short drive
Ah ha! What your saying is what I've read on other posting about the oil. Reason is after reading the "Specifications and Fluid Levels" on the Service manual, I downloaded, the levels are evidently incorrect. Engine spec there says 6.1 with oil filter. That's why I'm asking newbie questions. Thanks for the correct info including "onehundred80" posting. Being new to Crossfire I believe the only dumb question is the one that's not asked.
Being new to Crossfire I believe the only dumb question is the one that's not asked.
I've never understood that quote - and after eleven years here, I can tell you that the DUMBEST question is, and I quote: "My car won't start, any ideas?" (Romad, I KNOW you do not understand this statement - trust me, stick around a while, and you will not only understand you will agree with me.)
You are obviously new to the Crossfire - in time, you will learn:
The number of errors in the owner's manual is troubling. (You found one, you have many more to discover.)
The number of errors in the service manual is disturbing.
The ignorance of Chrysler dealers on the Crossfire is both alarming and costly - for anyone who visits a dealer for ANY reason. DEALERS have actually sent Crossfires out on the road with 5 1/2 quarts of oil in them. See my sigline? It is NOT a joke, I mean every word of it. (Even where I call myself a dumbass...... )

GG says it is much easier to add oil to an engine after changing it, then to have to take it out if overfilled. All too many posts here by members who have a stuck oil level sensor (which is a biach to replace) IMO mostly due to a chronic (or one time on a high mileage car) oil level too high condition. This should be a warning to everyone that adding is a lot easier than removing (or replacing a stuck oil level sender). It doesn't hurt the motor at all to have it between the low indication and the mid level indication on the dipstick.Add 7 1/2 quarts new oil after a complete draining (don't forget to put the pan plug back in unless using a top changing unit), cap it up, run it a few minutes, and check it. Why all the emphasis on 'filling to the full mark', is beyond me!

.
Great advice.
sometimes it the simple stuff that gets us.
“everything is awesome when you follow the rules”

Wow are you right.

Wow, are you wrong.

I don't get it, either. I put in 8 quarts, install the filter, start the engine and watch my oil pressure gauge to confirm it rises when the engine starts.
I'm done at that point. No checking, no obsessing on how high it is on the stick, I"m done.
8.5 is to much for this car period no matter the trim level. The only way I can possibly see this car taking 8.5 and not being overfilled is if you drained the oil and let it drain out for a day or two until no more was dripping out.
If you put 8.5 qts of oil in this car you should get a nice audible chime and your odometer flashing saying oil to high.
To the OP, that first line you showed in your pretty is your power steering line, they all leak a little like that. I would even call it a leak, mine looks the same. If you have oil on your tranny or where the black 2 inspection covers on the bell housing of the trans is that is most likely a rear main seal and will require you to drop the trans to fix. That's a 1k job at minimal. Mine's has been leaking for years and I haven't replaced it. I just wipe it down every few weeks, this is only on this motor and trans. If you visit the Mercedes forums you'll see owners with the m112 talking about rear main leaks.

What part of that sentence asks you out a 'Wow, are you wrong' statement? Just so we are sure because there are three distinct points in the sentence.

Good information about the chime. I'll try your suggestion about wiping it down every so often. So far it doesn't have any drips on my driveway. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll jack it up and wipe it down. Thanks
