Default Just got my new Fuel Filter

Hey guys, I just got my new Bosch/Mahle Fuel filter. I've never changed one on these cars, so hopefully everything goes well without any problems. I know there are some Posts on changing these out so I will be doing some research. Once completed I will update how this went. I might document this by taking pics. Thanks for the support.

I had asked early last year about the weird clamps used on the filter and got no response.
I figured out by destroying one that they CAN be removed and reused.
You use a pair of needlenose pliers, or a small screwdriver to release the 2 hook portions on each clamp.
You can do like most and just cut them off and put the new filter in with small screw clamps ...

MAKE SURE YOU RELEASE THE PRESSURE FIRST BY REMOVING FUSE 5 FROM THE RELAY CONTROL MODULE AND RUNNING THE ENGINE UNTIL IT STOPS.

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the fuel pump splash shield.
WARNING: The fuel system is under constant fuel pressure even with the engine off. Before disconnecting any fuel lines, this pressure must be released.

3. Release the fuel system pressure. (Refer to 14 - FUEL SYSTEM/FUEL DELIVERY - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
NOTE: Place a shop towel around fuel lines to catch any excess fuel during disassembly.

4. Remove the fuel filter/pressure regulator fuel line (1).
5. Remove the fuel rail supply line (3) at the fuel filter/pressure regulator.
6. Remove the fuel delivery hose.
7. Remove the fuel return hose at the fuel filter/pressure regulator.
8. Remove the clamp retaining screw and remove the fuel filter/pressure regulator

I gave up. Removed the splash guard, loosened the bracket, clamped the input line (just in case), and undid the hose crimps. But I couldn't slide the damn hoses off the old filter! Screw it, luckily the hose crimps can be reused. Put everything back and I'll just take it to my local shop.

Ugh...I'm getting rusty.

Twist the hoses off or use a small pry bar. Come on.... you give up too easily my friend. You cant be getting rusty just yet at age 27

I have found that using some pliers on the stuck hose and twisting back and forth slightly until free works. Then you can use a flat screwdriver to force the hose off the fitting.
( after time, the rubber sticks to the metal where the clamp is applying pressure )

That works a charm, I have a pair of pliers with a circular serrated area for gripping round parts and that does the trick. Just grip enough to nip the rubber and turn.

Dumb question, but does this process need to be done with an empty tank, or just the fuel pressure released?

Just with the fuel pressure released. Pull fuse F5 and run the car until it dies, it says it'll throw codes but no dash lights lit up on mine.

What most of us miss is the direction that the fuel filter should face. It should be the DRIVER'S side, NOT the passenger side! I mis-installed mine. I just hope I haven't damaged the fuel pressure regulator!

That means to go to the service manual and follow the procedure to let the pressure off first.

Get the service manual here: https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ollection.html

So what was the FINAL CONSENSUS on this? Can I do this the easy way by pulling fuse F5 and running the car until it dies, or will that throw a DTC code?

According to the service manual (excerpt below) outlining the pressure relief procedure, you MAY receive a code:

1. Remove the fuel filler cap from the fuel filler neck.
2. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the relay control module (3) located next to the PCM.
3. Start and run engine until it stalls.
4. Attempt restarting engine until it will no longer run.
5. Turn ignition key to OFF position.
6. Return the fuel pump fuse to the relay control module.
7. One or more Diagnostic Trouble Codes may have been stored in PCM memory due to fuel pump fuse removal.
The DRB IIIT scan tool must be used to erase any DTCs.

I just replaced mine yesterday. The easy way is to just clamp off all 4 fuel lines, remove clamps, pull lines off filter, remove filter, replace filter, put new clamps on fuel lines, install lines on new filter, tighten clamps. Start car and check for leaks. Very little fuel spill doing this. A little will come out of the lines and the filter holds a lot. Keep a small pan underneath to catch any fuel and to put the filter in. No additional steps are necessary doing it this way. Wrap something around the lines to prevent any damage to them from clamping. I used cardboard.
