Doc, I just picked up some Royal Purple 75-140w......
Devin reiterated by email and phone... DO NOT put any friction modifiers in with the oil... the Wavetrac works on friction...

OK, good to know....I will talk to Devin....ask some questions in order to get ready for all that will happen...Rob, Rudy, as well, as I have few others things to do while we are under there...but, my little break down in Michigan wasn't any fun...glad to be home...now, back to work...on the cars....lol
Update: I understand that even though all the testing was done for the srt6 and N/A crossfire AND THE MERCEDES C32 there is a problem with the axles coming out of the Wavetrac after it warms up and cools down,, a very quick fix is to get a used set of axles from a N/A or srt6 just to be on the safe side. spoke to Devin about this and it may cause a hold up on any slk's,, Steve you can tell everyone how and what fits ,i believe you have crossfire axles correct? not my suggestion,, I am just the reporter,,, jim
As for the oil here is the email i got from Dana.

ok if i understand this correctly the spacer and clip for the bolt in axles on the slk32 isnt working properly. i now have a 2003 slk32 and the axles are the same as the xfire(push in axles) the newer axles should work fine in place of a older bolt in axle but dont know the pricing
btw jim it isnt the c32. that is a different differential altogether
Jim, am I reading that as ONLY the SLK has a problem?? And maybe only the early ones? I believe that Steve said his '03 has the same setup as the SRT6..
That is bad news... hopefully SRT axels will make it workable....
edit: sorry Steve we were typing at the same time.

I refuse to buy new axles at this point. I find it hard to believe this is the first Wavetrac they have made where the factory axles had a c-clip... If it comes down to it, I guess I'll just find my own solution.
It looks like I may be one of the only ones with this issue, so no biggie for X-Fire group.

I'm attaching the official Wavetrac oil reference for you.
I read the Royal Purple bottle, as that's all I have easy access to here. It specifically states that it is specially formulated to lower friction (read: friction modifiers). Because of this, I did not pick it up. As I don't see me getting one soon, I will continue looking.

Thanks for posting that Buggin.
The Unitrax doc states to use the Chrysler/Mercedes recommended oil "unless you want to upgrade for racing."
Since most of us that are buying the LSD race our cars, how do we pick an upgraded oil and be sure it is within Unitrax warranty if they won't specify an approved brand / weight?
I gotta say that I have no idea how to chose a diff oil. I have no idea what "upgrading" diff oil will do, or what to pick. Anyone want to chime in? (Though, in all seriousness, I won't be buying any diff oil until I hear officially from Unitrax which one will not void the warranty.)

The one nice thing about having this project take as along as it has,
is that before I can install the Wavetrac I'll be over 100,000 miles on
the odometer, and won't have to worry about voiding my warranty.
Is that looking at the glass as half full, or what?
I do have one concern, though. New wine in old wine skins. With
this much wear on my ring and pinion gears, what's the chance that
they will fail with the Wavetrac?

the wear and tear on my ring and pinion gears being a cause for concern
when adding in the Wavetrac. Do appreciate the reminder on the type of
oil to fill with, but I don't think that answers my question.
best regards,
Coyote
Sorry.... of the failures reported and pics we have seen... the ring and pinion gears seem have survived... maybe someone else can confirm if they had damage to the ring and/or pinion gear...
this is what usually gets destroyed....
this is what usually gets destroyed....
most of the time the ring and pinion do not get damaged ,,when apart look for any chips or metal missing i went through 3 rearenda with the 6, and none of the R & p were damaged,, one i wasn't sure if it got warped so i didn't save it. the others were sent back to Chrysler, but they were good the R & P that is ,, one broke a pin, and side gears,,,one the pin took out the housing, and #3 broke into peaces,, the axles frose into the diff ,,100 ton press could not pull them out, so the diff and the pumpkin went back, rear and axles were new. jim

ok the diff is out!! what a pain! craig the axles need a block of wood against the diff to use to pry them out. takes some force. bad thing is the drivers side has the exhaust in the way. really hard to get any leverage to pry the axle out. tiny snap rings on the axle.
now i had 2 washers with grooves cut on the edges fall out while i was wrestling the diff. any idea were they go?
alan remember you having to drill a hole in the tire well to get the mount bolt out? the 03 stole your idea!! already has a hole
